An option for the adrenalin adventurers out there who are looking to explore the Perito Moreno Glacier in depth! This experience includes trekking alongside the glacier, then climbing on to it and really feeling very small on this humongous mass of ice. You will have plenty of time to explore; learn how the glacier moves, how old it is and more! After the ice trekking you will have free time to enjoy the walkways in front of the glacier and take wonderful pictures of this majestic giant.
We pick you up from your hotel first thing in the morning and take you to Bajo de Las Sombras port, from where a boat takes us for about 20 minutes across the part of the lake known as Brazo Rico.
Once on the far side, you are given an introductory talk on the day’s activities.
After checking the kit, you will be given a pair of crampons and one of the mountain guides will help you to fit them onto your boots later on.
We start with a trek up the moraine for about one and a half hours, which takes us to the glacier access point. From here there is an unbeatable view over the entire mass of ice.
During the trek we learn all about the behaviour of the glacier and its natural environment; you will be constantly awestruck by countless blue lagoons, deep cracks and huge sinkholes. Experienced mountain guides stay with us at all times to look after the safety of the group.
This trek on this spectacular glacier lasts more than three hours and at some point on the trip the guides choose a good place for lunch.
After this, we return to the moraine and begin our descent back down towards the port, where we board our boat and sail very close to the walls of the glacier before arriving at the port.
The excursion includes a visit to the walkways. You will be able to enjoy, for about an hour, the spectacular views of the glacier (you will be informed on the day if it is before or after the ice trekking).
After a full day of adventure, we return to El Calafate.
