The road between El Chaltén and Lago del Desierto is undoubtedly one of the most scenic routes in Southern Patagonia. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by towering mountains, ancient glaciers, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers, all framed by the lushest forests in the region—don’t be misled by the name Desierto!
We invite you to experience this breathtaking journey firsthand. Take full advantage of the prevailing tailwinds and make the ride even more exhilarating!
You’ll make your way to a meeting point in town, where you’ll test your bike and receive a complete kit, including a helmet, pump, water bottle, and security chain.
A transfer will take you to Lago del Desierto, located 37 km from El Chaltén. Once there, you can either start your cycling journey back straight away or take some time to explore the scenic trails around the lake. You’ll also have the option to hike to the beautiful Laguna del Glaciar Huemul (entrance not included).
The return route follows the same 37 km gravel road, which can be busy during the summer months. The path consists of gentle ascents and descents, with mostly flat sections, making for a smooth and enjoyable ride.
As you cycle back, you’ll be treated to breathtaking landscapes. The duration of the ride will depend on your pace and how long you choose to stop along the way. Plus, you won’t need to worry about the wind—it will always be at your back, making the journey even more pleasant.
You’ll finish the excursion where you started, returning your bike and kit, and wrapping up an unforgettable day in the heart of Patagonia.
