El Chaltén

Lago del Desierto Excursion: Half Day

Length: 6 Hs
Grade of Difficulty: Easy
Experience Required: No previous experience required

An easy day out to enjoy Lago del Desierto, a lovely lake at the end of the road. The lake, a deep blue, is surrounded by lush nothofagus forest and snowcapped mountains. This is the perfect place to come to either enjoy a boat ride on the lake or walk up to a hanging glacier.

You are picked up from your accommodation and will travel the 37km along the gravel road until you arrive at the lake. You will have a couple of stops en route to take photos and enjoy views of the valley and the River de las Vueltas that you often drive alongside. On arrival you have 2 hours, in which you can choose between a boat ride on the lake or a walk up to the hanging glacier Huemul.

The boat ride allows you to enjoy the surrounding from the lake without too much effort! Enjoy the waterfalls, the glaciers and the view of Mt Fitz Roy's northern face; a very different angle than we are used to from the town. If you choose the boat ride option you are also able to walk along te shores of the lake, beautiful black sand beaches.

The trek up to the Huemul glacier is short and in some areas steep, but well worth it. When you are above the  treeline you are rewarded with a 360 degree view of complete beauty! In front of you the glacier and its lagoon, to your right the Lake del Desierto and the snowcapped mountains, behind you the tree covered valley side and to your left the whole valley of the Las Vueltas river and in the distance FitzRoy. A perfect place to sit and just enjoy the nature and your surroundings. If you're thirsty, refill your bottle with the delicious glacial water gushing out of the lagoon!

Your driver will have confirmed where you need to be after the 2 hours at the lake, meet up with the driver and other passengers and make your way back to El Chaltén, arriving about 6 hours after you left.
