El Chaltén

Horseriding

Description

Since the white man arrived in Patagonia, riding a horse has been his way of working, travelling and exploring. So why not try riding a local horse? Just like the old times! Enjoy unique landscapes; the Patagonian steppe, mountains, forests and glacially formed valleys in one of the wildest areas on earth.

The options are:

  • In the mountains:
A half day of horse riding on Bonanza estancia, near El Chaltén.
  • On the Patagonian steppe:
A half day of horse riding on La Estela estancia, Route 40, between El Calafate and El Chaltén.

1. In the mountains - El Chaltén
Bonanza horse riding: half day

Length: 4 hours (2 hours horse riding)
Grade of difficulty: Easy
Experience required: No previous experience necessary
Season: November / March

Description

We collect you from your hotel in El Chaltén and drive out to Estancia Bonanza, 12km away, on the unpaved road heading for Lago del Desierto. There, we cross over the Río de Las Vueltas on a hanging bridge to where we meet the gauchos who will help us with the horses. We take the reins and our adventure begins!

We go through native forests and are able to enjoy typical views of this mountain area and also fantastic views of Mt Fitz Roy.

At the end of the ride we’ll enjoy a couple of mates (typical Argentine hot drink) together. Drop off at hotel

Description

This ride is located on an estancia in the middle of the Patagonian steppe, on the famous Route 40, en route between El Chaltén y El Calafate. A perfect option for making the most of the journey between the two towns. We leave the estancia’s stables on our tame horses to start an unforgettable ride across the estancia’s land and alonside Lake Viedma. From the lakeside, in the distance, we can also see the famous Mts of Fitz Roy and Torre. The flora and fauna on the dry steppe is also surprising: great fruit bushes of calafate, a famous fruit of the region. Fauna, we may spot guanacos, rheas, foxes and armadillos.

And with a bit of luck, we’ll see puma footprints, that inhabit the area. After arriving at the lake and riding along the beach, we start to head back towards the estancias’ buildings, cross country over volcanic ash dunes. Once back at the stables, you have the chance of unsadling and combing your horse, while enjoying a hot mate and typcial torta fritas (fried pastry)
